PGE requests proposals for future renewable power
On April 23, PGE issued a request for proposals to prospective bidders to supply renewable power to help meet our customers' future energy needs. We are seeking to acquire up to 218 average megawatts of mid- to long-term renewable energy, including biomass, wind, geothermal, solar and wave energy. These resources would be available between 2009 and 2014.
PGE plans to meet a significant amount of our projected load growth through 2012 with renewable energy. In addition to issuing the RFP, we are expanding our Biglow Canyon Wind Farm in Sherman County. By 2010, we expect to develop up to 450 megawatts of installed capacity at Biglow, enough electricity to power more than 100,000 homes. PGE also purchases 100 megawatts of wind power from two other wind farms in Oregon.
“By seeking proposals for new projects, PGE is expanding on our commitment to provide renewable energy for our customers,” said Jim Lobdell, PGE's vice president for Power Operations and Resource Strategy. “PGE sells more renewable power to residential customers than any other utility in the United States. We hope this RFP will encourage a number of proposals from bidders, large and small, who share our concern for the environment.”
The RFP comes after the Oregon Public Utility Commission determined that the renewable portion of PGE's latest Integrated Resource Plan is reasonable. This plan is our road map to providing reliable, affordable electricity for the long term.
Although the commission agreed that the need for additional renewable resources is reasonable, it requested that PGE make revisions to other portions of the plan.
Staff further recommended that the new plan include additional, longer-term analysis and address new resource decisions beyond 2012.
The commission staff has recommended that PGE resubmit our new plan within the next 18 months. |
